Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate: Dr. Cynthia Speaks!
Topic: What Type Of Caregiver Are You? Are You Proactive Or Reactive? That Is The Question
While caring for my mother, I would ask myself, what kind of caregiver am I. The question would often fall on my deaf ears because of my professional background. I had a working knowledge of the ins and outs of the “laying on of the hands”- taking care of humankind. Most of my movements centered on my training as a nurse. We were taught how to make a bed, never forgetting those military mitered corners. I recall my instructor counting the number of washcloths, to ensure I had the required amount needed when giving a bath. We were taught the ways to determine the proper temperature of the water before a shower or a bath to an elderly patient. We were drilled on what to look for when giving medications and performing treatments, and approaches to avoid falls and injuries. If you are reading this information, does any of this sound reactive or proactive? What type of caregiver would highlight these activities in the caregiving journey, and what would be the demeanor of someone responsible for the care of others.
What Word Describes Your Caregiving?
Does self-sacrificing, support, insight, gentleness, kindness, warmth, affection, and determination come to mind? These concepts may be central from a professional caregiver perspective, but a layperson finding themselves in the role may take training guidance and reinforcements. After all, the overarching goal is watchfulness and protection. All desires are directed toward “take care of” in the most comprehensive manner possible. Caregiving will always have codependency. We must never forget, do unto others as we would have them do unto us. That equals a win-win environment, even while the role can be stressful and long-term. As Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate, we celebrate and support all caregivers doing their best to make a difference in the lives of others.
Cheers! Be safe! Be well!
