Caregivers are people who help others with activities of daily living. We know they are often family members, friends, or neighbors of their loved ones. When caring for older people, talking to them about their needs and concerns is seldom done, but it is necessary. Health problems should not be a secret as we age. Something will break down! Something will wear out! Some chronic diseases will come-a-knockin’…the duty to care for loved ones cannot be underestimated. Having knowledge and understanding will serve all caregivers well. It begins with involving health professionals to understand what is demanded as you care for your loved one. You may need to make adaptations for safety in their home. You may need to speak with a nutritionist, physical therapist, occupational therapist, or mental health specialist to get clarity and support. There might be tasks to organize, medical terms to learn, and timetables to coordinate, especially if doctor appointments are often. It is always a great idea to put communication plans in place with family and friends if you need to call them for support. That means having visual phone numbers or emails that are accessible to all family members. Caregiving can be overwhelming, especially at the beginning. Try to take on one or two tasks at a time. Do not get discouraged in well-doing. Find resources in the community and take advantage of them. These suggestions are to maintain a healthy lifestyle for you and them.

One resource I would like to share is Caregiver Support Services. They are willing and equipped to help new and seasoned caregivers. Visit their website for more information.
