Healthy eating for seniors can help manage illness and disease. It can also help the management of chronic health problems. We know the list can be long. Aging has a way of gracing us with problems we do not want! To help the older adults accomplish health benefits that are aligned with proper eating, there are certain food groups that should be avoided.
Processed foods, especially carbohydrates, are loaded with little nutrients and fiber. These are the causes of weight gain.
Fried foods are high in calories. The digestive system of the elderly has slowed down. Deep fat fried foods in the diet of the elderly should be eliminated or small amounts at best.
Soft drinks, sugary drinks, get rid of them. Too much sugar! Many causes a spike in blood sugar in the body.
Canned foods are high in sodium. Be careful, sodium is problematic for elders with high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease. They should be avoided.
