Caregivers: Do Not Overlook Vision Health

You’ll never believe who I bumped into on my way to the eye doctor! Everybody (Author Unknown)

As we age, our vision ages with us. Make no mistake about it! We know our vision is a huge part of our movements. Frankly, our vision owns us and if you do not believe me, ask someone who has diminished vision or have lost their vision entirely. Other than the obvious; the aging process invites chronic conditions known to impact one’s vision.

The most common eye problems identified during eye examinations are macular degeneration, glaucoma, and cataracts. Did you know that chronic health conditions, like high blood pressure or diabetes, also affect the health of the eyes, often with no obvious warning signs?

Annual eye examinations are done by an optometrist. He or She is your first line of defense and helpful to identify eye diseases. Vision health includes examining the external and internal parts of the eyes, like the lids, retina, cornea, optic nerves, arteries, veins and so much more. Vision health is important!

Make regular vision examinations a part of your caregiving role. Vision health is just as important as other health needs.
