Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate: Dr. Cynthia Speaks!
Topic: Moving Elderly Loved Ones from Their Home Takes Time!
If we continue to breathe, we will grow older. The signs will be ever-so-present. Climbing stairs, changes in vision, knee pain, bending over, diminished hearing, and managing daily chores will become increasingly challenging over time. Falling becomes a constant concern as our aging loved ones try to manage their new normal. As you observe these situations in your loved ones, the conversation should turn to what is best for safety’s sake. A lot goes into relocation, especially if the home is owned. Let’s not think about the years of accumulated possessions that must be sold, donated, or given away. That really takes time!
Relocating loved ones is a process that requires careful consideration. No one will ever take care of your loved one as well as you will. If your loved one can communicate, they should be part of the conversation. Maintain open lines of communication with other family members. It becomes a taxing time for all. They will need support, love, and consideration as they face the reality of leaving behind what they hold dear. Many have implemented short-term fixes, such as neighbors checking in, installing cameras around the home, utilizing Meals on Wheels, and increasing lighting. These are proactive, but temporary fixes.
I talk about safety a lot. It is the leading cause of eldercare calamities. Things to think about:
· Is the home one story or two?
· Is daily morning care a challenge?
· Is preparing meals difficult?
· Is it challenging to get from a sitting to a standing position?
· Is mobility an issue?
· Is vision and hearing a concern?
· Is medication management required?
As Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate, temporary safeguards are not lasting. When you encounter challenging situations, don’t ignore them and pretend they don't exist. Start the conversation about moving your loved ones from their home. But remember, it takes time. Be Safe! Be Well!
