Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate: Dr. Cynthia Speaks!
Topic: COVID-19 & Vaccinations in Seniors
COVID-19! Yes, I went there! What one believes in, one shares! I wish mommy, my Queen were still with us and be able to take a picture of her getting her COVID-19 vaccination. WOW, she would be 101 years young! My years with her are over. I turn my attention to you and your loved ones. Why? I want our precious elders to live as long as God allows. I know it is scary with the massive amounts of information and might I add, misinformation that has us all in a tizzy.
Exhale! Inhale! Exhale!
Think back if you would when our children were infants and moving into the school age years. What did we have to do to enroll them into school? We had to prove that they had been vaccinated. Remember that blue and white card we carried to the doctor’s office for the nurse to stamp the date of each vaccinations (did I just date myself…LOL)?
Be honest, how many of us researched the vaccine against measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR)? We trusted our pediatricians. We were given a shot schedule and for the most part, followed it. I am asking that we trust our amazing scientist working day and night to protect us. Our aging populations need protection and your guidance as the caregiver.
Side Bar: Maurice Hilleman (1919–2005), considered the” father of modern vaccines” and impactful with the MMR vaccine was the leading microbiologist, specializing in vaccinology, developing over 40 vaccines during his lifetime.
This Is What You Need To Know!
In the community, Phase 1c applies to all seniors. Persons 65 and older, and persons 16 years old with high-risk medical conditions. Veterans who receive care at VA clinics and are at high risk from COVID-19 can received vaccinations at VA health care facilities; this group includes all Veterans at least 75 years old.
As a nurse, and Your Proactive Caregiver Advocate, I am encouraging, asking, pleading that you protect your care recipients. I can only ask, so I am asking. What’s love got to do with it? Everything!
